Electrospinning Nanomaterials

Electrospinning & Electrospraying

Electrospinning is a manufacturing process for the fabrication of fibers (100 nm – 10 µm) into a nonwoven mesh. Nanofibers are produced by passing a polymeric solution through an electric field. The rate of solvent evaporation and elongation of the polymeric threads results in the formation nanofibers.  Electrospinning can fabricate fibers of tunable diameters, porosity and mechanical properties. These fibers can be used to develop sheets, coatings of existing devices and fabricate tubular structures.

Electrospraying is a process that can be  used to fabricate particles and films of polymers. Utilizing the same principles of electrospinning and modulating the molecular weight and concentration of the polymer, solvent and working distance between the needle and collector results in the fabrication of particles instead of fibers.
